NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Health and Safety

NVQ Level 5 Diploma

THIS LEVEL IS A FEATHER IN THE CAP

The Level 5 NVQ Diploma is again a work-based qualification that recognises a person’s competence from workplace performance assessment, rather than relying on teaching and examinations. The Level 5 NVQ Diploma is equivalent to the NEBOSH Diploma. This qualification needs the collection of proof from your day-to-day health and safety work activities. This qualification process does not want you to be away from your workplace for long periods and any time spent with your assessor is spread over the period it takes you to complete the qualification, this is essentially a distance learning approach to gain a qualification. The Level 5 NVQ Diploma is internationally recognised as meeting the requirements for Graduate membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health which could be taken forward to Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH).

There are ten mandatory units in the Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice and the Diploma amounts to 108 credits. It is necessary for the candidates to demonstrate knowledge and competence in all units to gain the qualifications which are mentioned below:

  • Develop and implement effective communication systems for health and safety information to be dispersed in the organization (8 credits)
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture in the workplace (5 credits)
  • Develop and maintain individual and organisational competence in health and safety matters for effective control (10 credits)
  • Identify, assess and control health and safety risks to avoid hazards (18 credits)
  • Develop and implement proactive monitoring systems for health and safety measures (10 credits)
  • Develop and implement reactive monitoring systems for health and safety protection (15 credits)
  • Develop and implement health and safety emergency response systems and procedures to control emergency situations (12 credits)
  • Develop and implement health and safety review systems to avoid problems (8 credits)
  • Develop and implement the health and safety policy for future safety (14 credits)

The number of credits mentioned is commensurate to the size of the unit and award. Many universities will accept this qualification as part of the entry requirements for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The time it takes to complete the Level 5 NVQ Diploma will depend on your experience, the work you have done and evidence you already have. You can go at a self-described pace that suits your abilities and commitments. The typical completion is anything from 6 – 12 months. The time you take will depend on the amount of time you can assign to complete the qualification when balanced with your other commitments. The candidate must be 19 years old at the time of initial registration. As the qualification is work-based, involving development/implementation activities and collection of evidence the candidate must be in a position where they can provide this anytime during the course of the study. The knowledge of the candidate must be adequate enough to influence health and safety in the organisation that he works in. As the work-based activities require knowledge of health and safety it is advisable that he also attains a NEBOSH International General Certificate or anything similar.
