If you are looking to strive to the path of CMIOSH status and propel your career in the safety and health domain. There are two main routes to achieve this in your growth as a safety personnel. They are mainly the NEBOSH Diploma and the NVQ Level 5 Diploma. The pros and cons are discussed of the two main routes to achieve the CMIOSH qualification. The NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health aims at Safety Supervisors, Safety Officers or Safety Managers. The NVQ Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health also aim at the same posts. For the CMIOSH, the study mode of the Diploma is mainly classroom based, where there could be an additional home course. The Unit A is taught over three weeks (15 days) ; Unit B is taught over two weeks (10 days) and ; Unit C is taught over two weeks (10 days). Therefore totally 35 days classroom sessions would be enough.
CMIOSH through the NVQ stream is via vocational qualification, through work. The pace of completion of the course depends on the candidate. The assessment for the Diploma stream is that the Units A, B and C are each assessed by a three hour written exam. The Unit D is a review of 8,000 words about the health and safety performances in the organization. Whereas, in the NVQ study a detailed portfolio of evidence is submitted using RoSPA’s online system. This portfolio is checked against the required competencies, the entire schedule has to be necessarily seen in practice in the workplace. Now as far as the duration of the two is concerned, the former comprise of four units which can be taken in any order over a period of five years and the latter qualification must be completed within 2 years, though if you see technically it is a possibility to complete it within a span of 4 months. The cost also varies for the two courses. CMIOSH through the Diploma method is more expensive than through the NVQ stream. The advantages of acquiring the CMIOSH through Diploma is that it is an academic, degree level qualification. It is highly regarded and sought after by employers. It gives an understanding of a broad range of issues, thus provides a transferable knowledge base which is applicable across industrial sectors and the professional roles that they play . This a more relaxed pace to suit the candidate and can be stretched up to a maximum of 5 years. The NVQ is primarily work based, therefore easier to combine with daily tasks.
The system of examinations is ruled out and thus candidates who know that they do not perform well under pressure may find this as a great advantage. The pace is flexible, ranging from 4 months to 2 years. Through the Diploma branch the employers must be convinced of the commercial benefits as the time spent outside the work and cost involved is a considerable amount. The rigorous nature of the course requires a high degree of commitment from the examinee. The CMIOSH through the NVQ method rewards competencies within the current work situation, therefore is really suitable for the Safety Supervisors, Managers etc. who are already functioning in the correct role and no major change is required in the future in the organizations.
